Ingredients:

• Chuān shān jiǎ (穿山甲 Manis Squama, pangolin scales) (blast–fried) 9g
• Zào cì (皂刺 Gleditsiae Spina, gleditsia thorn) 9g
• Jīn yín huā (金银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]) 9g
• Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root) 9g
• Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh) 6g
• Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) 6g
• Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) 9g
• Bái zhǐ (白芷 Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Dahurian angelica) 9g
• Sháo yào (芍药 Paeoniae Radix, peony [root]) 9g
• Zhè bèi (浙贝 Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus, Zhèjiāng fritillaria [bulb]) 9g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 9g
• Guī wěi (归尾 Angelicae Sinensis Radicis Extremitas, Chinese angelica [root] tail) 3g
• Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 6g

Action: Clears heat and resolves toxin; expels pus and disperses swelling.

Indication: Initial-stage welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū) that are painful, red, hot, and swollen, or suppurating welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū) prior to rupture. In clinical practice, this formula can be used to treat mastitis, osteomyelitis, sties, acute dacryocystitis (inflammation of the lacrimal sac), and appendicitis.

Method: Decoct with water (or with water and yellow wine).

Warnings: This formula should not be used for any sores that have burst.

Rationale: Fáng fēng and Bái zhǐ free local blood, harmonize provisioning and defense, and relieve swelling. Jīn yín huā and Gān cǎo clear heat and resolve toxin. Dāng guī, Chì sháo, Rǔ xiāng, and Mò yào quicken the blood, move stasis, and relieve pain. Chuān shān jiǎ, Zào jiǎo cì, Tiān huā fěn, and Zhè bèi mǔ free the channels, disperse stasis, and break binds. Chén pí is added for its qì-rectifying action; it helps to move stasis by moving qì.

Variations:

• Painful red swollen sores: Add Zǐ huā dì dīng (紫花地丁 Violae Herba, violet) and Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion).
• Damage to liquid by great heat: Add Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root), and omit Bái zhǐ (白芷 Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Dahurian angelica), Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia), and Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel).
• Prior to suppuration: Add Chuān shān jiǎ (穿山甲 Manis Squama, pangolin scales) and Zào jiǎo cì (皂角刺 Gleditsiae Spina, gleditsia thorn).
• Severe blood heat: Add Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]) and Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]).
• Constipation: Add Máng xiāo (芒硝 Natrii Sulfas , mirabilite) and Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb).
• Absence of severe pain: Omit Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) and Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh).
