Immortal Formula Life-Giving Beverage

仙方活命饮 〔仙方活命飲〕xiān fāng huó mìng yǐn

Ingredients:

Action: Clears heat and resolves toxin; expels pus and disperses swelling.

Indication: Initial-stage welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū) that are painful, red, hot, and swollen, or suppurating welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū) prior to rupture. In clinical practice, this formula can be used to treat mastitis, osteomyelitis, sties, acute dacryocystitis (inflammation of the lacrimal sac), and appendicitis.

Method: Decoct with water (or with water and yellow wine).

Warnings: This formula should not be used for any sores that have burst.

Rationale: Fáng fēng and Bái zhǐ free local blood, harmonize provisioning and defense, and relieve swelling. Jīn yín huā and Gān cǎo clear heat and resolve toxin. Dāng guī, Chì sháo, Rǔ xiāng, and Mò yào quicken the blood, move stasis, and relieve pain. Chuān shān jiǎ, Zào jiǎo cì, Tiān huā fěn, and Zhè bèi mǔ free the channels, disperse stasis, and break binds. Chén pí is added for its qì-rectifying action; it helps to move stasis by moving qì.
