Pearls and Jade Gruel
珠玉二宝粥 〔珠玉二寶粥〕 zhū yù èr bǎo zhōu

Ingredients
- Shēng shān yào (生山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma Crudum, raw dioscorea [root]) 60g
- Shēng yì rén (生薏仁 Coicis Semen Crudum, raw coix seed) 60g
- Shì bǐng (柿饼 Kaki Fructus Exsiccatus, dried persimmon) 30g
Actions: Supplements the lung; fortifies the spleen, and nourishes the stomach.
Indications: Yīn vacuity with internal heat; taxation cough or dry cough; diarrhea; poor appetite.
Method: Boil the coix until tender. Crush the dioscorea (grind the dried form if the fresh is unavailable), and chop the persimmon to in small pieces. Add both these to the pot, and boil to a thick gruel.
Rationale: Both Shān yào and Yì yǐ rén clear and supplement the spleen and lung. The stickiness of Shān yào and the percolating action of Yì yǐ rén are mutually complementary. They ensure that this gruel can be taken over a long period of time without any damage to the health.
