猪蹄粥 〔豬蹄粥〕 zhū tí zhōu

Source: Shòu Qīn Yǎng Lǎo Xīn Shū 寿亲养老新书

Ingredients

Indications: Insufficient breast milk or breast milk stoppage.

Method: Clean, chop and boil the trotters for 1–2 hrs. Combine the broth with a decoction of the tongcao and loulu???, add rice, and cook to a gruel, adding scallions at the end.

Rationale: Pig's trotters produce a thick unctuous soup when boiled for a long time, and they have always been considered very nourishing by the Chinese. They are said to strengthen the lumbus and legs, replenish kidney essence, and moisturize the skin. They have been used to promote lactation for centuries. The Qiān jīn fāngXX for example, suggests the use of sow's trotters for this purpose. Mù tōng is sweet and bland in flavor, and cool in nature. It disinhibits urine and promotes lactation. Lòu lú is cool, bitter, and salty, and enters the stomach and large intestine channels. It clears heat and resolves toxin, disperses swelling and expels pus, promotes lactation and frees the sinews. It is used to treat welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū), mammary welling-abscess (rǔ yōng), damp impediment (shī bì), and bleeding from hemorrhoids, as well as scant breast milk.
