止带方 〔止帶方〕zhǐ dài fāng

Ingredients:
茵陈蒿 15g- Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) 10g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 10g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 10g
- Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) (stir-fried until black) 8g
- Dān pí (丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) 8g
- Chuān niú xī (川牛膝 Cyathulae Radix, cyathula [root]) 8g
- Chē qián zǐ (车前子 Plantaginis Semen, plantago seed) 8g
- Zhū líng (猪苓 Polyporus , polyporus) 8g
- Zé xiè (泽泻 Alismatis Rhizoma, alisma [tuber]) 8g
Action: Clears heat and disinhibits dampness; cools the blood and checks vaginal discharge.
Indication: Damp-heat pouring downward in the liver channel manifesting in vaginal discharge that is white and either red or yellow in color, thick in consistency, and has a bad smell, together with signs such as bitter taste in the mouth, irascibility, and short voidings of reddish urine. Tongue: Red with yellow fur. Pulse: Stringlike and slippery.

Rationale: Yīn chén is aromatic and also bitter and draining. It clears liver-gallbladder damp-heat and courses depressed liver and gallbladder qì. Huáng bǎi and Zhī zǐ clear heat and dry dampness. Chē qián zǐ, Zhū líng, Fú líng, and Zé xiè clear heat and disinhibit water. Vaginal discharge that is part red and part white, together with a red tongue with yellow fur indicates depressed heat in the blood aspect of the liver channel. For this reason, Mǔ dān pí and Chì sháo are used to clear the liver and cool the blood. Niú xī works with Yīn chén to quicken the blood and course the liver.
