Menstruation-Normalizing Decoction

顺经汤 〔順經湯〕shùn jīng tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Nourishes the lung and kidney; clears heat and cools the blood.

Indication: Counterflow menstruation due to lung-kidney yīn vacuity with vacuity fire flaming upward, characterized by vomiting of blood (blood ejection) or nosebleed (nǜ xuè) during or two or three days either side of menstruation. The menstrual discharge is dark red. Other signs include dizziness, tinnitus, tidal reddening of the face, and dry mouth with desire for fluids. Tongue: Red or crimson without fur. Pulse: Fine and rapid.

Category:

Method: Use nanshashen, the southern variety of shashen. Decoct with water.

Rationale: Shú dì huáng, Dāng guī, and Shā shēn enrich the lung and kidney, thereby counteracting the fire. Fú líng fortifies the spleen and stomach and prevents the Shú dì huáng from clogging. Bái sháo helps the Shā shēn to enrich the lung and kidney. With Mǔ dān pí it also cools and quickens the blood, preventing stasis. The charred Jīng jiè suì stanches bleeding, thus addressing the tip. Dāng guī, Bái sháo, and Shú dì huáng all nourish the blood and regulate menstruation.

Notes:shùn, normalize, means correct counterflow, 逆 nì. The formula treats counterflow menstruation, i.e., vomiting of blood or spontaneous external bleeding instead of menstruation.
