Channel-Clearing (Menses-Clearing) Decoction (Powder)
清经汤(散) 〔清經湯(散)〕 qīng jīng tāng (sǎn)

Ingredients
- Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) 9g
- Dì gǔ pí (地骨皮 Lycii Cortex, lycium bark) 15g
- Xiān máo (仙茅 Curculiginis Rhizoma, curculigo [root]) 9g
- Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) 9g
- Qīng hāo (青蒿 Artemisiae Annuae Herba, sweet wormwood) 9g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 9g
- Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) (stir-fried with brine) 6g
Actions: Enriches yīn and clears heat; cools the blood and regulates menstruation.
Indications: Advanced menstruation from vacuity heat with copious, thick flow that is either dark red or purplish red in color,
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Shú dì huáng, Bái sháo, and Fú líng enrich yīn and supplement the blood. Dì gǔ pí, Mǔ dān pí, Qīng hāo, and Huáng bǎi clear heat and cool the blood.
Variations:
- Pronounced
blood heat : Used raw instead of Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]), and add Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]). Yīn vacuity with effulgent fire : Add Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]), Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]), and ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue).Blood heat with stasis: Add Qiàn cǎo (茜草 Rubiae Radix, madder [root]) and Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb).Blood heat withmenstrual pain : Add Xiāng fù (香附 Cyperi Rhizoma, cyperus [rhizome]) and Yán hú suǒ (延胡索 Corydalis Rhizoma, corydalis [rhizome]).
