Actions: Cools the blood and dispels stasis.
Indications: Blood heat causing fulminant flooding and spotting with accompanying signs such as heat vexation and thirst. Pulse: Forceful, rapid, and slippery.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Shēng dì huáng and Mǔ dān pí clear heat and cool the blood. Huáng qín clears heat and stanches bleeding. Huáng bǎi clears heat and drains fire. These agents treat the heat that is causing the bleeding. Bái máo gēn, Dì yú, Pú huáng, and trachycarpus clear heat, but more importantly address the bleeding directly. Yì mǔ cǎo moves the blood and dispels stasis, and is added to ensure that the blood-stanching agents do not cause stasis.
