Menses-Securing Pill
固经丸 〔固經丸〕gù jīng wán

Ingredients:
- Guī bǎn (龟版 Testudinis Plastrum, tortoise plastron) (mix–fried) 120g
- Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) (stir–fried with wine) 90g
- Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) (stir–fried with wine) 90g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) (stir–fried with wine) 90g
- Xiāng fù (香附 Cyperi Rhizoma, cyperus [rhizome]) (stir–fried with wine) 45g
- Shū gēn pí (樗根皮 Ailanthi Radicis Cortex, ailanthus root bark) (stir–fried) 45g
Action: Clears heat and enriches yīn; secures the menses and stanches bleeding.
Indication: Yīn vacuity with effulgent fire and frenetic movement of hot blood characterized by profuse menstruation, purple-black menstrual discharge, and red and white vaginal discharge, heat vexation in the chest, and reddish urine. Tongue: Red with yellow fur. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.

Method: Grind to a powder, blend with flour and wine, and form into pills.
Dosage: Take 6–9g 1–2 times a day on an empty stomach with warm wine or water. Nowadays prepared as a decoction.
Warnings: Contraindicated in
Rationale: Guī bǎn enriches yīn and subdues yáng. Bái sháo nourishes the blood and constrains yīn. Huáng qín and Huáng bǎi clear heat and drain fire. Chūn pí stanches bleeding and secures the menses. Xiāng fù rectifies qì and resolve depression, so as to regulate menstruation and relieve pain. When yīn is enriched and the fire is drained, the frenetic movement of hot blood ceases and the menstrual blood is secured.
