Ingredients
- Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) 15g
- Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]) 15g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 15g
- Qín jiāo (秦艽 Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, large gentian [root]) 15g
- Tiān dōng (天冬 Asparagi Radix, asparagus [root]) 15g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 10g
- Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]) 10g
- Sāng bái pí (桑白皮 Mori Cortex, mulberry bark) 10g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 10g
- Biē jiǎ (鳖甲 Trionycis Carapax, turtle shell) (mix-fried with butter) 20g
- Jié gěng (桔梗 Platycodonis Radix, platycodon [root]) 6g
- Zǐ wǎn (紫菀 Asteris Radix, aster [root]) 6g
- Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) 6g
- Fǎ bàn xià (法半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum, pro formula pinellia [rhizome]) 6g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 3g
Actions: Boosts qì and engenders liquid; nourishes yīn and abates heat; transforms phlegm and relieves cough.
Indications: Vacuity taxation with signs of depletion of qì and yīn of vacuity fire scorching the lung such as persistent low heat effusion, fatigued limbs, shortness of breath, torpid intake, vexing heat in the five hearts, night sweating, emaciation,
Rationale: Dǎng shēn and Huáng qí boost qì and engender liquid. Tiān dōng and Shēng dì huáng nourish yīn and clear heat. Qín jiāo, Dì gǔ pí, Sāng bái pí, Biē jiǎ, Chì sháo, Zhī mǔ, and Chái hú clear vacuity heat. Zǐ wǎn, Jié gěng, Fú líng, and Fǎ bàn xià transform phlegm and relieve cough, thus treating the accompanying signs. The dryness of the Bàn xià is counteracted by sweet coldness of Shēng dì huáng.
