Gallbladder-Disinhibiting Jaundice-Abating Decoction

利胆退黄汤 〔利膽退黃湯〕 lì dǎn tuì huáng tāng

Ingredients

Actions: Clears heat and disinhibits dampness; disinhibits the gallbladder and courses the liver.

Indications: Yáng jaundice characterized by tangerine-colored skin and eyes, yellow or reddish urine, heat effusion that may be accompanied by aversion to cold, dry mouth sometimes with thirst, fullness and oppression in the chest and stomach duct, aversion to oil, reduced eating, and dull or in severe cases stabbing in the left rib-side. Tongue: Red with yellow fur. Pulse: Stringlike and rapid.

Rationale: The sovereign agents are Yīn chén and Jīn qián cǎo, which eliminate damp-heat, disinhibit the gallbladder, and abate jaundice. The minister agents are Bài jiàng cǎo and Bǎn lán gēn, which clear heat and resolve toxin, Zhī zǐ, which clears and disinhibits damp-heat, and Yù mǐ xū, which percolates dampness and disinhibits water. The assistant is Yù jīn, which rectifies qì and quickens the blood.
