Sunshine Pill

见晛丸 〔見晛丸〕 jiàn xiàn wán

Ingredients

Actions: Break blood and disperse accumulations.

Indications: Concretions or accumulations (abdominal lumps of fixed location) with pain exacerbated by pressure, purplish dark complexion, menstruation at irregular intervals, dry mouth without desire to drink, purple tongue margins, thick dry tongue fur, and sunken rough pulse.

Method: Usually prepared as a decoction.

Rationale: Fù zǐ, Ròu guì, and Zǐ shí yīng warm and disperse cold qì. Sān léng, Shuǐ zhì, Táo rén, Xuè jié, Guǐ jiàn yǔ, and Bīng láng quicken the blood and attack hardness. Mù xiāng and Yán hú suǒ rectify qì and move the blood. Zé xiè and Dà huáng make the static blood go out with the stool. For milder cases, use Guì zhī fú líng wán (桂枝茯苓丸 Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill).

Variations: Blood concretions with signs of blood vacuity: Add Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica), Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]), and Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) to nourish the blood, and turning the formula into one of simultaneous supplementation and attack.

Notes: The formula is so called because its effect is like that of sunshine that disperses a mist.
