Cooling the blood

凉血 〔涼血〕liáng xuè

Also clearing blood heat. A method of treatment used to address heat penetrating provisioning-blood in externally contracted febrile diseases with general signs such as high fever, clouded spirit, and crimson tongue, and specific signs of frenetic movement of hot blood (blood ejection, spontaneous external bleeding, bloody stool, or bloody urine).

Medicinal therapy: A commonly used blood-cooling formula is Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction (犀角地黄汤 xī jiǎo dì huáng tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on HT and PC. Select PC-3 (Marsh at the Bend, 曲泽 qū zé), PC-9 (Central Hub, 中冲 zhōng chōng), HT-9 (Lesser Surge, 少冲 shào chōng), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), and BL-40 (Bend Center, 委中 wěi zhōng); needle with drainage and, if appropriate, prick to bleed. The following points are all blood-cooling points that can be combined with the above: KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), LR-2 (Moving Between, 行间 xíng jiān), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi), PC-7 (Great Mound, 大陵 dà líng), HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén), and BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù).
