Cold reversal

寒厥 〔寒厥〕hán jué

A reversal pattern attributable to yáng vacuity and yīn exuberance, characterized by reversal cold of the extremities, aversion to cold and lying in curled-up posture, clear-grain diarrhea, and absence of thirst. In some cases, there is cold body and curled posture, abdominal pain, red face, green-blue nails, and, in severe cases, clouding reversal. The tongue body is pale with moist fur, and the pulse is usually faint and fine.

Medicinal therapy: Warm yáng and boost qì. For patients showing signs of blood vacuity and congealing cold, also nourish the blood and harmonize provisioning. Use Counterflow Cold Decoction (四逆汤 sì nì tāng), Vessel-Freeing Counterflow Cold Decoction (通脉四逆汤 tōng mài sì nì tāng), Aconite Center-Rectifying Decoction (附子理中汤 fù zǐ lǐ zhōng tāng), and Chinese Angelica Counterflow Cold Decoction (当归四逆汤 dāng guī sì nì tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on back transport points, GV, CV, and ST. Select BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), GV-4 (Life Gate, 命门 mìng mén), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), and needle with supplementation and add moxa. Apply moxibustion on ginger or salt at CV-8 (Spirit Gate Tower, 神阙 shén què).
