Wind-damp lumbar pain

风湿腰痛 〔風濕腰痛〕fēng shī yāo tòng

Lumbar pain that arises when, after lying in damp places and contracting wind, the evils stagnate in the channel. The contraction of wind and dampness is often encouraged by kidney vacuity. Wind-damp lumbar pain is characterized by hypertonicity of lumbus and back inhibiting movement, and a floating rough pulse. In some cases, there may be heat effusion and aversion to wind, or swelling.

Medicinal therapy: Dispel wind and transform dampness with formulas such as Notopterygium Toxin-Vanquishing Decoction (羌活败毒汤 qiāng huó bài dú tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on BL, GV, SP, and GB. Select BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), BL-40 (Bend Center, 委中 wěi zhōng), GV-3 (Lumbar Yáng Pass, 腰阳关 yāo yáng guān), ouch points (阿是穴 ā shì xué), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán). Needle with drainage. See lumbar pain.
