Supplementing qì and securing the exterior
补气固表 〔補氣固表〕 bǔ qì gù biǎo
A method of treatment used to address qì vacuity spontaneous sweating (insecurity of the exterior), which easily arises when there is heart qì or lung qì vacuity.
Medicinal therapy: Astragalus (Astragali Radix, 黄芪 huáng qí), and white atractylodes (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白朮 bái zhú) are commonly used qì-supplementing exterior-securing medicinals. A representative qì-supplementing exterior-securing formula is
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on back transport points, CV, ST, LI, HT, and SI. Select LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), HT-6 (Yīn Cleft, 阴郄 yīn xī), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), and BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù); needle with supplementation and, if appropriate, moxa. For heart qì vacuity, add BL-15 (Heart Transport, 心俞 xīn shù) and CV-14 (Great Tower Gate, 巨阙 jù què). For lung qì vacuity add LU-9 (Great Abyss, 太渊 tài yuān) and SP-3 (Supreme White, 太白 tài bái).
