Static blood headache

瘀血头痛 〔瘀血頭痛〕 yū xuè tóu tòng

Headache attributed to static blood resulting from external injury or from stagnation in the vessels in enduring sickness. Static blood headache is a continually intermittent pain of fixed location, like the piercing of an awl. Accompanying signs include a stagnant complexion, stasis speckles on the tongue, and a rough pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Quicken the blood and transform stasis. Use formulas such as Orifice-Freeing Blood-Quickening Decoction (通窍活血汤 tōng qiào huó xuè tāng) or House of Blood Stasis-Expelling Decoction (血府逐瘀汤 xuè fǔ zhú yū tāng) or variations.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LI, SP, and ouch points (阿是穴 ā shì xué). Drain ouch points (阿是穴 ā shì xué) on the head, and prick them to bleed in order to drain stasis and free the network vessels. Drain BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù), SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), and SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo) to quicken the blood, and supplement LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ) to move qì.
