Kidney vacuity water flood

肾虚水泛 〔腎虛水泛〕shèn xū shuǐ fàn

Also kidney yáng vacuity water flood. Water swelling due to kidney yáng depletion that prevents the normal transformation of water-damp. The kidney governs water and stands in exterior-interior relationship with the bladder. If kidney yáng is vacuous, it cannot govern water, bladder qì transformation (opening and closing action of the bladder) is inhibited, and urine decreases. At the same time, splenic movement and transformation is deprived of the warming action of kidney yáng so that water gathers to create water swelling that is most pronounced in the lower body and characterized by failure of the flesh to rebound swiftly after pressure is released. Other signs include heavy aching lumbus, cold limbs and fear of cold, pale enlarged tongue, white glossy tongue fur, and a fine sunken pulse.

Biomedical correspondence: chronic nephritis.
