Blood heat profuse menstruation

血热月经过多 〔血熱月經過多〕xuè rè yuè jīng guò duō

Profuse menstruation due to blood heat damaging the thoroughfare (chōng) and controlling (rèn) vessels and causing frenetic movement of the blood. Distinction is made between vacuity heat and repletion heat.

Patterns

Repletion heat (实热 shí rè) is characterized by profuse menstrual flow that is crimson or purple in color, thick in consistency, and sometimes bears a foul smell, in addition to which a red facial complexion, dry mouth, thirst, and periodic vexation and agitation are observed.

Medicinal therapy: Clear heat and cool the blood with Channel-Clearing Decoction (清经汤 qīng jīng tāng) plus ass hide glue (Asini Corii Colla, 阿胶 ē jiāo).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on the CV, SP, LR, ST, and LI, selecting CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), LI-2 (Second Space, 二间 èr jiān), ST-44 (Inner Court, 内庭 nèi tíng), and LR-2 (Moving Between, 行间 xíng jiān), and needling with drainage.

Vacuity heat (虚热 xū rè) is marked by postmeridian heat in the soles and palms.

Medicinal therapy: Enrich yīn, clear heat, and cool the blood with Rehmannia and Lycium Root Bark Decoction (两地汤 liǎng dì tāng) or Lycium Root Bark Beverage (地骨皮饮 dì gǔ pí yǐn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on CV and three yīn channels of the foot. Select CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén); needle with even supplementation and drainage.
