Action: Nourishes kidney yīn; clears vacuity heat.
Indication: Advanced menstruation (early periods) due to kidney yīn depletion and vacuity fire with scant, sticky, deep red menstrual discharge, tidal reddening of the cheeks,
Category:
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Shēng dì huáng is a sweet cold moist agent that not only nourishes yīn and engenders liquid but also clears heat and cools the blood. Because it treats both root and tip, it is used as in large quantities as the sovereign agent. Xuán shēn and Mài dōng enrich yīn and invigorate water. Bái sháo and ē jiāo nourish the blood and enrich humor. These four agents together supplement yīn insufficiency. Dì gǔ pí clears kidney and liver vacuity heat. Nourishing yīn is the chief action, which is supported by clearing heat.
