飧泄 〔飧泄〕 sūn xiè

飧泻〔飧瀉〕sūn xiè

A term found in older texts, denoting diarrhea with clear thin stool containing undigested food and accompanied by rumbling intestines. It indicates clear qì failing to bear upward (that is, spleen qì failing to extract the essence of grain and water and carry it upward to be utilized by the body). It is usually ascribed to liver depression and spleen vacuity, or to wind, dampness, cold or heat invading the lung.

Medicinal therapy: Supplement the spleen and fortify the stomach with Ginseng, Poria, and White Atractylodes Powder (参苓白朮散 shēn líng bái zhú sǎn). See also wind diarrhea; damp diarrhea, cold diarrhea, and heat diarrhea.

Etymology

Chinese:sūn, to soak cooked rice in water; cooked food; supper. The character is composed of 夕 xì, evening, and 食 shí food.
