Epidemic disease

疫 〔疫〕yì

Also scourge; scourge epidemic; warm epidemic. From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, běn bìng lùn). Any contagious disease attributed to the contraction of epidemic qì and affecting many members of a community. See cause of disease.

The two most commonly observed kinds are pestilential qì or epidemic toxin hidden in the membrane source and summerheat-heat epidemic toxin hidden the stomach.

Pestilential qì epidemic toxin hidden in the membrane source mò yuán starts with abhorrence of cold and vigorous heat [effusion], quickly shifting to a pattern of heat without headache and generalized pain, red or crimson tongue with a chalky white tongue fur, and a rapid pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Course, disinhibit, and outthrust using Membrane-Source–Opening Beverage (达原饮 dá yuán yǐn) or Three Dispersers Beverage (三消饮 sān xiāo yǐn).

Summerheat-heat epidemic toxin hidden in the stomach is marked by vigorous heat [effusion], vexation and agitation, splitting headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, crimson tongue with parched fur, and in some cases by spontaneous external bleeding, macules, and clouded spirit or coma.

Medicinal therapy: Clear the scourge and resolve toxin with Scourge-Clearing Toxin-Vanquishing Beverage (清瘟败毒饮 qīng wēn bài dú yǐn).
