Also pestilential qì; epidemic pestilential qì; perverse qì; toxic qì; abnormal qì; miscellaneous qì. Any disease evil that causes epidemic diseases, that is, highly contagious diseases. Both epidemic qì and epidemic disease are referred to by numerous names. Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, liù yuán zhèng jì dà lùn) states, When pestilence comes on a large scale, the people tend to die suddenly. It was formerly believed that pestilential qì resulted from abnormal weather conditions such as prolonged drought or extreme heat. See externally contracted causes.
