SP-12 Surging Gate

冲门 〔衝門〕 chōng mén

Alternate names: 慈宫 cí gōng, Palace of Charity; 前章门 qián zhāng mén, Front Camphorwood Gate; 上慈宫 shàng cí gōng, Upper Palace of Charity

Channel: SP, foot greater yīn (tài yīn) spleen channel; shared point on the yīn linking (yīn wéi) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located in the groin, level with the superior border of the pubic bone, 3.5 cùn lateral to the midline (just lateral to the femoral pulse).

Classical location: One cùn below Bowel Abode (SP-13) at the pulsating vessel in the crease at the extremity of the pubic bone, four and a half cùn from the midline of the abdomen. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: On the medial side, the femoral artery. The point at which the femoral nerve traverses.

Action: Rectifies qì dynamic; clears heat and disinhibits dampness.

Modern indications: Abdominal pain; mounting qì (shàn qì, inguinal hernia); flooding and spotting; vaginal discharge.

Classical indications: Abdominal cold qì fullness; painful accumulations and gatherings in the abdomen; mounting (shàn) pain; difficult lactation; surging of the fetus into the heart region disturbing breathing.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 5 cones; pole 10‒20 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the spleen and liver channels and the yīn linking vessel (yīn wéi mài).
