CV-23 Ridge Spring

廉泉 〔廉泉〕 lián quán

Alternate names: 本池 běn chí, Root Pool; 喉中 hóu zhōng, Larynx Center; 舌本 shé běn, Tongue Root

Channel: CV, controlling (rèn) vessel; shared point on the yīn linking (yīn wéi) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the anterior aspect of the neck, immediately superior to the hyoid bone on the midline.

Classical location: When the head is tilted back, the point is directly above Celestial Chimney (CV-22), midway between the chin and the laryngeal prominence (Adam’s apple), below the root of the tongue. Find the point in supine posture. From The Golden Mirror of Medicine (医宗金鑑 yī zōng jīn jiàn)

Local anatomy: The anterior jugular vein. The branch of the cutaneous cervical nerve, the hypoglossal nerve, and the branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve.

Action: Disinhibits the throat and eliminates phlegm; clears fire and downbears counterflow.

Modern indications: Subglossal swelling and pain; slack tongue and drooling; stiff tongue preventing speech; fulminant loss of voice; difficulty in swallowing.

Classical indications: Cough and qì ascent; panting and retching of foam; swelling of the subglossal region with difficulty in speech; contraction of the root of the tongue; drooling; dispersion-thirst; mouth sores; clenched jaw.

Needle stimulus: Needling: With the head tilted back, 0.3‒1.0 cùn upward oblique insertion (with the needle pointed towards GV-17). Moxa: pole 5‒20 min.

Needle sensation: Numbness and distension at the root of the tongue.

Warning: Direct moxibustion is contraindicated at this point.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the conception and yīn linking vessel (yīn wéi mài)s.
