Stiff tongue

舌强 〔舌強〕shé qiáng

A tongue that is stiff, moves sluggishly, and inhibits speech. A stiff tongue occurs in several serious diseases, such as heat entering the pericardium, phlegm confounding the orifices of the heart, phlegm obstructing the network vessels, and liver wind stirring internally. Other signs are therefore decisive in determining the nature of the disease. In Western medicine, a stiff tongue generally indicates diseases of the central nervous system.
