Cyrtomii Fortunei Rhizoma

昏鸡头 〔昏雞頭〕 hūn jī tóu

Origin in unofficial sources: Cyrtomium fortunei J. Sm. [= Polystichum fortunei Nakai]

Use: Medicinal

Properties: Bitter; slightly cold; slightly toxic.

Actions and indications: Clears heat and resolves toxin; cools the blood and extinguishes wind; disperses stasis and stanches bleeding; kills worms. Treats maculopapular eruption in febrile disease; sand foulness (shā huì); malarial disease and dysentery disease; liver yáng headache and dizziness; vomiting of blood (blood ejection); bloody stool; flooding and spotting; vaginal discharge; mammary welling-abscesses (rǔ yōng); injury from knocks and falls.

Dosage and method: Oral: Decoct (9–15g).

Quality: Thick rhizomes with few fine roots are signs of good quality.

Production area: Yangtze river basin, and north as far as sourthern Shǎnxī (Shaanxi) and south as far as northern Fújiàn, Guǎngdōng, and Guǎngxī.
