Ingredients:

• Hé shǒu wū (何首乌 Polygoni Multiflori Radix, flowery knotweed [root]) 9–30g
• Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–9g
• Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) 9–15g
• Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 6g
• Jiāng (姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, ginger) (roasted) 3 slices

Action: Supplements qì and the blood

Indication: Vacuity malaria, i.e., persistent malaria with dual vacuity of qì and blood. Signs: Withered yellow complexion, attacks that are brought on by taxation fatigue. Tongue: Pale. Pulse: Large, vacuous, and forceless. Take three hours before an expected attack. In applying this formula, it is important to determine the presence of vacuity. It should not be used in the beginning stages of malaria, where the evil has not yet taken its toll on right qì.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Persistent attacks of malarial disease??? eventually cause damage to qì and blood. This formula interrupts malaria by supplementing qì and blood, so as to dispel the evil by supporting right qì. Hé shǒu wū supplements the liver and kidney and boosts essence-blood. Dǎng shēn and Dāng guī blood qì and supplement the blood. Chén pí rectifies qì and disinhibits the center, while warm acrid roasted ginger disperses cold. These two agents together fortify the spleen and prevent the supplementing agents from clogging movement and transformation.

Variations:

• Spleen vacuity with fatigue and tendency to sweat: Add Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]), Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]), and mix-fried Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]).
• Glomus lump under the left rib-side: Add Biē jiǎ (鳖甲 Trionycis Carapax, turtle shell), Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell), and Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root]).
• Yīn vacuity malaria with red or crimson tongue, heat effusion at night that cools by the morning: Add Qīng hāo (青蒿 Artemisiae Annuae Herba, sweet wormwood), Biē jiǎ (鳖甲 Trionycis Carapax, turtle shell), Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]), and Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]).
