Malaria-Interrupting Seven-Jewel Beverage

截疟七宝饮 〔截瘧七寶飲〕jié nüè qī bǎo yǐn

Source: Yáng Shì Jiā Cáng Fāng 杨氏家藏方

Alternate Chinese names: 七宝散

Ingredients:

Action: Dries dampness and dispels phlegm; interrupts malaria.

Indication: Recurrent malaria attacks in strong patients with pronounced phlegm-damp signs. Pulse: Large, slippery, stringlike, and forceful. Take three hours before an expected attack.

Category:

Method: Add one spoonful of yellow rice wine after boiling.

Rationale: Cháng shān, the sovereign agent, interrupts malaria and dispels phlegm. Cǎo guǒ is an acrid aromatic that transforms turbidity. Bīng láng nut is a warm acrid agent that breaks binds. These two agents together repel foulness and turbidity and break phlegm binds, thus helping the Cháng shān to interrupt malaria. Chén pí, Hòu pò, and Qīng pí rectify qì and transform dampness. They move the spleen and dispel dampness. Chén pí in particular prevents the Cháng shān from causing vomiting, as does the rice wine, which also warms and frees qì and the blood, as well as helping the Cháng shān to perform its action. Zhì gān cǎo can help to harmonize the other agents, but being sweet and stagnating it can increase the chance of vomiting.
