Actions: Enriches kidney essence; nourishes the liver, and regulates menstruation.
Indications: Menstruation at irregular intervals (i.e., periods sometimes early and sometimes late) due to liver-kidney depletion. Accompanying signs: Thin, pale menstrual discharge, dizziness and tinnitus, aching lumbus, lassitude of spirit and lack of strength, profuse urination at night, and reduced eating. Tongue: Pale with white fur. Pulse: Sunken and weak.
Rationale: Shú dì huáng is sweet and moist and enriches kidney yīn and replenishes essence and marrow. Tù sī zǐ, Xù duàn, and Shān zhū yú help to supplement kidney yīn in addition to supplementing kidney yáng. Wǔ wèi zǐ helps the Shān zhū yú to secure essence and constrain qì, to enhance the kidney's storage function. Yuǎn zhì and Wǔ wèi zǐ work together to promote interaction between the heart and kidney. Dǎng shēn, Shān yào, and Gān cǎo boost qì and fortify the spleen, thus strengthening the source of engendering transformation
on which the health of the body rests.
