Ingredients
- Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root]) 15g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 9g
- Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) 9g
- Sān léng (三棱 Sparganii Rhizoma, sparganium [root]) 6g
- É zhú (莪朮 Curcumae Rhizoma, curcuma rhizome) 6g
Actions: Quickens the blood and breaks stasis; disperses concretions and relieves pain.
Indications: Miscarriage or rupture due to ectopic (extrauterine) pregnancy, characterized by overdue menses, dark red discharge that may contain fleshy or membranous lumps,
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: According to tradition Chinese medicine, acute lesser abdominal (lower abdominal) pain of fixed location that is exacerbated by pressure indicates a concretion or accumulation, which is treated by quickening the blood and dispelling stasis. Mǔ dān pí, Táo rén, and Chì sháo quicken the blood and transform stasis. Sān léng and é zhú break blood and disperse concretions. When the concretion is eliminated, the discharge ceases and the pain abates.
Variations:
- Repletion heat: Add Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) and Máng xiāo (芒硝 Natrii Sulfas , mirabilite). Add Zhǐ shí (枳实 Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, unripe bitter orange) and Hòu pò (厚朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, officinal magnolia bark).
