Anemarrhena and Fritillaria Cough-Quieting Decoction

二母宁嗽汤 〔二母寧嗽湯〕èr mǔ níng sòu tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Transforms phlegm and clears and moistens; relieves cough and calms panting.

Indication: Cough with sticky yellow phlegm, dry mouth and throat, oppression in the chest, and shortness of breath. Contraindicated in cough due to cool dryness or cold-damp.

Category:

Method: Grind to a fine powder and form into 9 gr pills with honey. Nowadays also prepared as a decoction.

Dosage: 1 pill 2–3 times a day with water.

Warnings: Contraindicated in cough due to cool dryness or cold-damp.

Rationale: The sovereign agents are Bèi mǔ and Zhī mǔ which are cool, cold, and enter the lung. They clear and clear the lung, transform phlegm, and quiet the cough. Guā lóu, Sāng bái pí, Jú hóng, and Wǔ wèi zǐ are the ministers since they help to transform phlegm and relieve cough. Zhī zǐ, Huáng qín, Zhǐ shí, Fú líng and Gān cǎo are the assistant agents. They enter the lung, spleen, and liver channels. They not only clear wood fire and cool lung metal but also percolate the center dampness and relieve depressed earth, thus treating the wood fire tormenting metal, and addressing the source of phlegm. They also serve to harmonize all the agents in the formula.
