Plantago Leaf Gruel
车前叶粥 〔車前葉粥〕 chēn qiān yè zhōu

Ingredients
- Xīn xiān chē qián yè (新鲜车前叶 Plantaginis Folium Recens, fresh plantago leaf) 30–60g
- Cōng bái (葱白 Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white) 1 stalk
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
Actions: Disinhibits urine, clears heat, brightens the eyes, and dispels phlegm.
Indications: Urinary stoppage, dribbling painful urination, bloody urine, water swelling, painful swollen eyes, and cough with copious phlegm. In modern clinical practice it is used for diarrhea due to enteritis, and jaundice.
Method: Wash and chop the plantago leaf, and decoct with the scallion. Then use the decoction to cook the gruel.
Rationale: Chē qián cǎo leaf is cold, sweet, and nontoxic. It enters the large intestine and triple burner channels. It disinhibits water, clears heat, brightens the eyes, and dispels phlegm. It is sweet, slippery, and disinhibiting
and should not be used in patients suffering from seminal efflux or enuresis.
