Abdomen-Quieting Decoction
肠宁汤 〔腸寧湯〕cháng níng tāng

Ingredients:
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) (washed in wine) 15g
- Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) 15g
- Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) 10g
- Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) 10g
- ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) 10g
- Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]) 10g
- Xù duàn (续断 Dipsaci Radix, dipsacus [root]) 10g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3g
- Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) 1g
Action: Nourishes the blood and boosts qì.
Indication: Postpartum blood vacuity with signs such as dull abdominal pain relieved by pressure, scant, pale lochia, dizziness and tinnitus, heart palpitation, forgetfulness, lusterless facial complexion, and dry bound stool. Tongue: Pale. Pulse: Fine and weak.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Dāng guī, Shú dì huáng, and ē jiāo nourish and harmonize the blood, replenishing the blood chamber and moving the blood to relieve pain. Xù duàn supplements the liver and kidney and acts with Dāng guī to harmonize the blood and relieve pain. Mài dōng enriches humor, and acts with Dāng guī to nourish the blood and counteracts its dryness. Dǎng shēn, Ròu guì, Shān yào, and Gān cǎo boost qì and fortify the spleen, thereby strengthening the source of engendering transformation.
The Ròu guì balances the stickiness of the Shú dì huáng and ē jiāo.
