八正散 〔八正散〕bā zhèng sǎn

Ingredients:
- Qú mài (瞿麦 Dianthi Herba, dianthus) 10g
- Biǎn xù (萹蓄 Polygoni Avicularis Herba, knotgrass) 10g
- Chē qián zǐ (车前子 Plantaginis Semen, plantago seed) 10g
- Mù tōng (木通 Akebiae Trifoliatae Caulis, trifoliate akebia) 10g
- Huá shí (滑石 Talcum , talcum) 30g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 3g
- Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) (roasted) 10g
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) (processed) 10g
- Dēng xīn cǎo (灯心草 Junci Medulla, juncus [pith]) 1g
Action: Clears heat and drains fire; disinhibits water and frees strangury.
Indication: Damp-heat pouring down into the bladder, causing dribbling urination, painful urination, and reddish urine, and stone strangury or unctuous strangury.

Rationale: Mù tōng, Qú mài, Chē qián zǐ, Biǎn xù, and Huá shí clear heat and free strangury; they clear and disinhibit lower-burner damp-heat, hence they eliminate the root of the disorder and address the main signs. Zhī zǐ clears triple-burner heat and Dēng xīn cǎo helps to abduct the heat downward. Dà huáng drains heat and, combined with Mù tōng, frees the stool and disinhibits water, drains heat and downbears fire. Gān cǎo helps to relieve pain and prevents the cold bitter agents from damaging the stomach.
