Ingredients
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 3g
- Ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) 3g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3g
- Ài yè (艾叶 Artemisiae Argyi Folium, mugwort [leaf]) 3g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 4g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 4g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 6g
Indications: Precipitation of blood in pregnancy with pain in the abdomen. Now also used generally for flooding and spotting, profuse menstruation during menopause, bleeding from hemorrhoids, bloody urine, and intestinal bleeding.
Method: Decoct with water.
Dosage:
Rationale: Chuān xiōng, Dāng guī, and Sháo yào are mild blood quickening agents that help to regulate blood flow in the uterus. Stronger blood-quickening agents such as Hóng huā, é zhú, and Méng chóng could not be used in this case for fear of causing miscarriage. Gān dì huáng nourishes yīn, mugwort warms the uterus, and ē jiāo nourishes the blood.
