Ramie Decoction
苎根汤 〔苧根湯〕 zhù gēn tāng

Ingredients
- Zhù má gēn (苎麻根 Boehmeriae Radix, ramie [root]) 9–15g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3–6g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–12g
- Xiān máo (仙茅 Curculiginis Rhizoma, curculigo [root]) 6–12g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 9–15g
- Ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) 6–12g
Actions: Nourishes the blood and quiets the fetus; checks flooding.
Indications: Stirring fetus due to strain, abdominal pain and aching lumbus, sagging in the lesser abdomen, and scant red flooding and spotting.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Dāng guī, Shēng dì huáng, and Bái sháo nourish the blood and quiet the fetus. ē jiāo supplements the blood and stanches bleeding. Zhù má gēn cools the blood and quiets the fetus. Gān cǎo and Bái sháo used together relieve tension and pain.
Variations:
Spleen-stomach vacuity withreduced food intake ,upwelling and nausea : Add Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) and Shā rén (砂仁 Amomi Fructus, amomum [fruit]).Qì vacuity and lack of strength: Add Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) and Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]).Kidney vacuity withlumbar pain : Add agents such as Tù sī zǐ (菟丝子 Cuscutae Semen, cuscuta [seed]), Dù zhòng (杜仲 Eucommiae Cortex, eucommia [bark]), Xù duàn (续断 Dipsaci Radix, dipsacus [root]), andsangjisheng1 .
