True Gentleman Gruel

真君粥 〔真君粥〕 zhēn jūn zhōu

Source: Shān Jiā Qīng Gòng 山家清供

Ingredients

Actions: Moistens the lung and stabilizes panting; engenders liquid and allays thirst.

Indications: Lung dryness panting with cough without phlegm, dry mouth, heart vexation, and thirst, and poor appetite.

Method: Wash and boil ripe apricots until tender, remove stones, and add the fruit and sugar to the ready-made gruel, and cook together for a short time.

Rationale: This gruel is made with whole apricots, not the Xìng rén usually used in medicinal formulas. The fruit itself moistens the lung, engenders liquid, and relieves cough. People suffering from thirst, dryness, and cough without phlegm after febrile disease has caused damage to liquid find a few apricots very gratifying.

Notes: This gruel is named after the hermit healer Dong Feng, popularly called True Gentleman Dong, of the Three Kingdoms era, whose only charge for a cure was a few apricot tree saplings, which he planted to make an apricot grove, whose fruit later was exchanged for rice to save the people from starvation. Compare also Apricot Kernel Gruel (xìng rén zhōu.)
