Damage to liquid

伤津 〔傷津〕shāng jīn

A disease pattern resulting from major depletion of fluids following high fever, excessive sweating in externally contracted febrile disease or from severe vomiting and diarrhea. Signs include thirst with desire to drink, dry throat, lips, tongue, nose, and skin, and a dry red tongue.

Medicinal therapy: Clear heat and moisten dryness; engender liquid and increase humor. Commonly used medicinals include adenophora/glehnia (Adenophorae seu Glehniae Radix, 沙参 shā shēn), ophiopogon (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦门冬 mài mén dōng), Solomon’s seal (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 玉竹 yù zhú), scrophularia (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参 xuán shēn), dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄 shēng dì huáng), trichosanthes root (Trichosanthis Radix, 天花粉 tiān huā fěn), pseudostellaria (Pseudostellariae Radix, 太子参 tài zǐ shēn), and black sesame (Sesami Semen Nigrum, 黑脂麻 hēi zhī má). Formulas include Humor-Increasing Decoction (增液汤 zēng yè tāng), Adenophora/Glehnia and Ophiopogon Decoction (沙参麦冬汤 shā shēn mài dōng tāng), and Lophatherum and Gypsum Decoction (竹叶石膏汤 zhú yè shí gāo tāng).
