Solomon's Seal Gruel
玉竹粥 〔玉竹粥〕 yù zhú zhōu

Ingredients
- Yù zhú (玉竹 Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, Solomon’s seal [root]) 15–20g
- Bīng táng (冰糖 Saccharon Crystallinum, rock candy) 1 pinch
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 60g
Actions: Enriches yīn and moistens the lung; engenders liquid and relieves cough.
Indications: Lung dryness cough with little or no phlegm; vexation and thirst, and
Method: Make a decoction of the Solomon's seal. If fresh Solomon's seal is used, double the amount, wash, remove fine roots, and chop before decoction. Boil the rice with the strained decoction.
Rationale: Yù zhú is balanced, sweet, and nontoxic. It enters the lung and stomach channels. It nourishes yīn, moistens dryness, and eliminates vexation, and allays thirst. It is used in many medicinal formulas to treat damage to yīn in febrile disease with vexation and thirst.
