- Guī bǎn (龟版 Testudinis Plastrum, tortoise plastron) 40g
- Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]) 20g
- Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) 30g
- Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) 20g
- Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 10g
- Suǒ yáng (锁阳 Cynomorii Herba, cynomorium) 20g
- Hǔ gǔ (虎骨 Tigris Os, tiger bone) 15g
- Gān jiāng (干姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger) 5g
Action: Enriches yīn and downbears fire; boosts essence blood; strengthens the sinews and bones.
Indication: Liver-kidney yīn vacuity and insufficiency of qì and blood with limp aching lumbus and knees, emaciation of the legs, and feeble gait. A red tongue

Rationale: When kidney water is sufficient, it can counteract fire, and when liver blood is sufficient, it can nourish the sinews. Shú dì huáng and Guī bǎn are therefore used to enrich the liver and kidney and to replenish essence and marrow. Hǔ gǔ (alluded to in formula name) is warm and sweet; it strengthens the sinew and bone, treating bone wilting due to kidney vacuity. Suǒ yáng nourishes the sinews.
