External Medicine Toad Venom Pill
外科蟾酥丸 〔外科蟾酥丸〕 wài kē chán sū wán

Ingredients
- Chán sū (蟾酥 Bufonis Venenum, toad venom) 6g
- Qīng fěn (轻粉 Calomelas , calomel) 1.5g
- Kū fán (枯矾 Alumen Dishydratum, calcined alum) 3g
- Hán shuǐ shí (寒水石 Gypsum seu Calcitum , glauberite) 3g
- Tóng lǜ (铜绿 Aeris Robigo, copper rust) (calcined) 3g
- Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) 3g
- Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh) 3g
- Dǎn fán (胆矾 Chalcanthitum , chalcanthite) 3g
- Shè xiāng (麝香 Moschus , musk) 3g
- Xióng huáng (雄黄 Realgar , realgar) 6g
- Wō niú (蜗牛 Eulota , snail) 21 pieces
- Zhū shā gēn (朱砂根 Ardisiae Crenatae Radix, coral ardisia [root]) 9g
Actions: Resolves toxin and disperses swelling; quickens the blood and relieves pain.
Indications: Clove sores, flat-abscess of the brain (nǎo jū), mammary welling-abscess (rǔ yōng), and bone flat-abscess (gǔ jū).
Rationale: Chán sū, Xióng huáng, Zhū shā, hanshuishi, and Wō niú clear heat and resolve toxin. Shè xiāng, Rǔ xiāng, and Mò yào quicken the blood and disperse swelling. Qīng fěn, Kū fán, Dǎn fán, and Tóng lǜ dry dampness and dispel putridity. This formula is suitable for any type of sores, and is especially effective in the early stages. It can be taken orally, or applied topically.
