Poria Four Combined with Scutellaria and Peony Decoction

四苓合芩芍汤 〔四苓合芩芍湯〕 sì líng hé qín sháo tāng

Ingredients

Actions: Clears heat and disinhibits dampness.

Indications: Damp-heat pouring down into the large intestine with dampness more pronounced than heat and manifesting in diarrhea with discomfort unrelieved by defecation, thin sloppy stool, tense abdomen, short voidings of reddish urine. Tongue fur: White, thick, and slimy. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Fú líng, Zhū líng, and Zé xiè percolate dampness and disinhibit water, and harden the stool by promoting urination. Cāng zhú warm, bitter damp-drying agent. Huáng qín clears heat and dries dampness. These five agents separate and disinhibit damp-heat. Hòu pò, Chén pí, and Mù xiāng move qì and transform dampness, while the first of these three also has a pain-relieving effect. Bái sháo also relieves tension and pain, and combined with Mù xiāng and Hòu pò, addresses the abdominal pain and diarrhea.
