Gastrodia and Astragalus Decoction

升麻黄芪汤 〔升麻黃耆湯〕shēng má huáng qí tāng

Source: Yī Xué Zhōng Zhōng Cān Xī Lù 医学衷中参西录

Ingredients:

Action: Boosts qì and upbears yáng; courses qì.

Indication: Dribbling urinary stoppage due to qì fall with inhibited voidings of scant urine, lassitude of spirit, and shortness of breath. Tongue: Pale. Pulse: Moderate and weak.

Category:

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: This decoction is based on Bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng (补中益气汤 Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction), which treats spleen-stomach vacuity and qì fall. This formula places more emphasis on raising fall rather than supplementing the center, so Rén shēn, Bái zhú, and Gān cǎo are not used. Instead, Huáng qí combined with Shēng má to raise yáng. Dāng guī and Chái hú are included to course the liver, the Dāng guī preventing the Chái hú from damaging liver yīn.
