Fresh Phragmites Gruel
生芦根粥 〔生蘆根粥〕 shēng lú gēn zhōu

Ingredients
- Xiān lú gēn (鲜芦根 Phragmitis Rhizoma Recens, fresh phragmites [root]) 100–150g
- Zhú rú (竹茹 Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, bamboo shavings) 15–20g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 60g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 2 slices
Actions: Clears heat, eliminates vexation, engenders liquid, and checks vomiting.
Indications:
Rationale: Lú gēn is sweet in flavor and cold in nature. It enters the lung and stomach channels. It is used to dispel phlegm and expel pus in the treatment of pulmonary welling-abscess (fèi yōng) and coughing of yellow pus and turbid phlegm, and to clear stomach heat, engender liquid, and check vomiting to treat heat vexation in febrile disease and vomiting or hiccup due to stomach heat. Zhú rú are very similar to Lú gēn in nature, flavor, and action. They are sweet and cool; they enter the lung and stomach channels; and they clear the lung and transform phlegm on the one hand, and clear the stomach and check vomiting on the other.
