Actions: Disinhibits water and frees strangury; clears heat and stanches bleeding.
Indications: Damage to correcting vessels by damp-heat manifesting in burning pain on urination, frequent voidings of reddish or purplish urine, and accompanied by sagging distension in the smaller abdomen, and lumbar pain. Tongue: Normal in color with a thin yellow fur. Pulse: Stringlike and rapid.
Rationale: Qú mài is a cold bitter downsinker that disinhibits the small intestine and abducts heat. It is an important agent in the treatment of damp-heat strangury. Hence, it is the sovereign agent in this formula. Chē qián zǐ, Fú líng, Bái máo gēn, Shí wéi, and Huá shí disinhibit urine and free strangury as well as clearing heat. Sāng bái pí diffuses lung qì and moves water, helping the strangury-freeing agents. Huáng lián and Shēng dì huáng clear heat and cool the blood while ē jiāo and Xuè yú tànnourish the blood and stanch bleeding. Bái máo gēn also stanches bleeding. These four agents address the bloody urine. Chì sháo both quickens and cools the blood, ensuring that the blood-stanching medicinals do not cause stasis. Gān cǎo harmonize all the agents in the formula.
