Phlegm-Expelling Pill
祛痰丸 〔祛痰丸〕 qū tán wán
Source: Zá Bìng Yuán Liú Xī Zhú 杂病源流犀烛
Ingredients
- Zào jiá (皂荚 Gleditsiae Fructus, gleditsia [fruit]) (processed with ginger) 30g
- Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) 30g
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) 60g
- Jú hóng (橘红 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, red tangerine peel) 15g
- Jié gěng (桔梗 Platycodonis Radix, platycodon [root]) 15g
- Tiān má (天麻 Gastrodiae Rhizoma, gastrodia [root]) 15g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 21g
- Bò hé (薄荷 Menthae Herba, mint) 9g
- Qīng méng shí (青礞石 Chloriti Lapis, chlorite [schist]) 3g
- Bái zhǐ (白芷 Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Dahurian angelica) 3g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 1g
Indications: Thunder head wind (雷头风 léi tóu fēng) arising when phlegm heat engenders wind.
Method: The rhubarb should be steeped in wine and paper-wrap-roasted three times. Grind all the ingredients to a fine powder. Steam and form into pills. Swallow with water.
