Wind-Expelling Heat-Dispersing Drink
驱风散热饮子 〔驅風散熱飲子〕qū fēng sàn rè yǐn zǐ

Ingredients:
- Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]) 9g
- Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed]) 9g
- Qiāng huó (羌活 Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, notopterygium [root]) 9g
- Bò hé (薄荷 Menthae Herba, mint) 6g
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) 9g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 12g
- Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) 9g
- Dāng guī wěi (当归尾 Angelicae Sinensis Radicis Extremitas, Chinese angelica [root] tail) 9g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3g
- Shān zhī zǐ (山栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 9g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 6g
Action: Expels wind and disperses heat; quickens the blood and relieves pain.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Lián qiào, Zhī zǐ, Dà huáng clear heat and resolve toxin. Bò hé, Niú bàng zǐ, and Qiāng huó course wind and disperse heat. Chì sháo, Dāng guī wěi, and Chuān xiōng quicken the blood and relieve pain. Gān cǎo harmonizes all the agents in the formula.
Variations:
- Pronounced heat: Add Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion) and Chuān xīn lián (穿心莲 Andrographis Herba, andrographis).
- Severe itching: Add Chán tuì (蝉蜕 Cicadae Periostracum, cicada molting) and Bái zhǐ (白芷 Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Dahurian angelica).
- Copious secretions: Add Huáng lián (黄连 Coptidis Rhizoma, coptis [root]) and Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]).
Dry bound stool : Increase the Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb).- Short voidings of reddish urine: Add Dàn zhú yè (淡竹叶 Lophatheri Herba, lophatherum) and Bái máo gēn (白茅根 Imperatae Rhizoma, imperata [rhizome]).
