Gallbladder-Clearing Fire-Draining Decoction
清胆泻火汤 〔清膽瀉火湯〕 qīng dǎn xiè huǒ tāng

Ingredients
- Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) 15g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 15g
- Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) 9g
- Yīn chén (茵陈 Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, virgate wormwood) 30g
- Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 9g
- Lóng dǎn (龙胆 Gentianae Radix, gentian [root]) 9g
- Yù jīn (郁金 Curcumae Radix, curcuma [root]) 9g
- Mù xiāng (木香 Aucklandiae Radix, costusroot) 9g
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) (add at end) 9g
- Máng xiāo (芒硝 Natrii Sulfas , mirabilite) (drenched) 9g
Actions: Courses the liver, frees the interior, and resolves dampness.
Indications: Cholecystitis characterized by repletion fire signs unremitting rib-side pain, dry mouth and bitter taste in the mouth,
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Chái hú, Mù xiāng, and Yù jīn course the liver and rectify qì. Huáng qín clears the gallbladder. Dà huáng frees the bowels. Bàn xià checks vomiting. These agents are also common to Qīng dǎn xíng qì tāng (清胆行气汤 Gallbladder-Clearing Qì-Moving Decoction)and
Variations:
- Severe heat: Add Bǎn lán gēn (板蓝根 Isatidis Radix, isatis root), Jīn yín huā (金银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]), and Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]).
Constipation : Increase Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) and Máng xiāo (芒硝 Natrii Sulfas , mirabilite), and add Hòu pò (厚朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, officinal magnolia bark).- Severe pain: Add Chuān liàn zǐ (川楝子 Toosendan Fructus, toosendan [fruit]) and Yán hú suǒ (延胡索 Corydalis Rhizoma, corydalis [rhizome]).
Vomiting and retching : Add Zhú rú (竹茹 Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, bamboo shavings).Poor appetite : Add Huò xiāng (藿香 Pogostemonis Herba, patchouli), Pèi lán (佩兰 Eupatorii Herba, eupatorium), and Shān zhā (山楂 Crataegi Fructus, crataegus [fruit]).Static blood : Add Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel), Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica), Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]), and Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]).
