Scutellaria, Stemona, and Salvia Elixir
芩部丹 〔芩部丹〕 qín bù dān

Ingredients
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 9–12g
- Bǎi bù (百部 Stemonae Radix, stemona [root]) 12–18g
- Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root]) 9–12g
Indications: Pulmonary tuberculosis with cough and
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Bǎi bù fights consumption and relieves cough. It is an important agent in the treatment of pulmonary consumption. Huáng qín supports it by clearing the lung and draining heat. Dān shēn quickens the band nourishes the blood, and in this case helps action of the formula by supporting right qì.
Variations:
- Acute
cough : Add Zǐ wǎn (紫菀 Asteris Radix, aster [root]), Kuǎn dōng huā (款冬花 Farfarae Flos, coltsfoot), and Bèi mǔ (贝母 Fritillariae Bulbus, fritillaria [bulb]). Night sweating : Wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子 Schisandrae Fructus, schisandra [berry]) and Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell).- Persistent low
heat effusion : Add Dì gǔ pí (地骨皮 Lycii Cortex, lycium bark), Tiān dōng (天冬 Asparagi Radix, asparagus [root]), and Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]). Expectoration of blood : Add Xiān hè cǎo (仙鹤草 Agrimoniae Herba, agrimony) and Cè bǎi yè (侧柏叶 Platycladi Cacumen, arborvitae leaf).- Expectoration of foul-smelling phlegm: Add Shí dà gōng láo yè (十大功劳叶 Mahoniae Folium, mahonia [leaf]), Yú xīng cǎo (鱼腥草 Houttuyniae Herba, houttuynia), and Xià kū cǎo (夏枯草 Prunellae Spica, prunella [spike]).
