Notopterygium and Isatis Root Decoction
羌蓝汤 〔羌藍湯〕 qiāng lán tāng
Source: Jīng Yàn Fāng Empirical formula
Ingredients
- Qiāng huó (羌活 Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, notopterygium [root]) 9–12g
- Bǎn lán gēn (板蓝根 Isatidis Radix, isatis root) 15–30g
Actions: Resolves the exterior; clears heat and resolves toxin.
Indications: External contraction with heat effusion, aversion to cold, headache, pain in the limbs, painful swollen throat. Tongue: Red. Pulse: Slippery and rapid. In integrated clinical practice, this formula is used to treat influenza, acute tonsillitis, laryngitis, and parotitis (mumps) where the signs include heat effusion with aversion to cold.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This is a new formula for the common cold. Qiāng huó effuses and disperses wind-cold and resolves the exterior. It also eliminates wind-damp and relieves the pain it causes. In addition, it can also abate heat effusion. Bǎn lán gēn clears heat and resolves toxin. The heat-clearing toxin-resolving action can be enhanced by the addition of Pú gōng yīng.
